Pittsburgh Irish Festival The Lots at Sandcastle

The Pittsburgh Irish Festival, Inc. celebrates the Irish experience in America. Our “Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Festival” has become a springboard for a new cultural awakening of all things Celtic in Western Pennsylvania. The beauty of Irish dance, music, and literature bridges many borders. Our desire is to build upon a strong cultural foundation and expand the wealth of talented artisans, both domestic and foreign, available to our audience. Currently, our Cultural Area presents weavers, Irish historians, lace makers, storytellers, Gaelic symbol drawing, and harp and whistle demonstrations, and along side with our Children’s Area, represents our commitment to providing entertaining and educational interaction for families.

The Fort Pitt Museum and Point State Park invites homeschool students to participate in a series of in-depth classes related to the history and environment of the Forks of the Ohio River. Classes will be both hands-on and minds-on and include reading and writing activities, student led discussions, hiking, and outdoor observation.

This homeschool program is for students in grades 7-8.

In this class, students will explore the science behind why the forests in Pennsylvania undergo seasonal color changes, as well as why the colors are vibrant some years and duller other years.

Students will learn about what triggers seasonal leaf color change.
Students will engage in hands-on activities that help explain why leaves change colors in fall.
Students will be able to name color pigments found in leaves.
This session costs $10 per student. Each class must be registered for individually online. Multiple students may be registered for the same class as part of one registration. Please register online.

This is a drop-off class, but parents and families are welcome to stay on site to visit the Fort Pitt Museum at no additional charge.

If the minimum number of students have not been registered, those registered for the class will be notified and registrations refunded. If and when the maximum number of students have been registered, please contact Kathleen Lugarich at kmlugarich@heinzhistorycenter.org to be placed on the waiting list and indicate the number of students and class.
