Summer Swimming 2019! – Swimming Pools to the North of Pittsburgh

The North Hills of Pittsburgh have several pools open to the public. Find things to do with your kids this summer at these FamilyFun pools.

Note: Many pools are cash only for admission and concession stands.

The Avonworth Pool

The Avonworth Pool is an old-fashioned community pool located off of Camp Horne Road in Avonworth. It is a classic, L-shaped Pool with a shallow end and a deep end with a diving board and a spiral slide. The Pool also has changing rooms and a concession stand. There is a baby pool for younger children.

The Avonworth Pool opens May 25th and is open through Labor Day with limited hours at the start and the end of the season. The Pool is open from 1130AM-700PM Saturday, Sunday and Monday and 400-700PM Tuesday through Friday with some closings for events and for bad weather. The Snack Bar is open from 1200PM-630PM when the Pool is open at 1100SM. Summer hours will be 1130AM-700PM daily.

Daily Admission is $7.00 for adults 17+, $6.00 for children 4-17, $5.00 for seniors 63+ and $5.00 for everyone who enters after 330PM. Children 4 and under are free. Night swims are $4.00. There are Pool passes available for residents and non-residents. The Family Pass (two adults and all children under 17 who live at the same address) is $255.00 for residents and $295.00 for non-residents. The Individual Pass is $135.00 for residents and $180.00 for non-residents. The Senior Pass for those 63+ is $100.00 for residents and $130.00 for non-residents. Caregiver Passes are $25.00. The mid-season pool pass can be purchased after July 5, 2019. The mid-season Family Pass (two adults and all children under 17 who live at the same address) is $130.00 for residents and $155.00 for non-residents. The Individual mid-season pass is $70.00 for residents and $95.00 for non-residents. The Senior mid-season Pass for those 63+ is $55.00 for residents and $70.00 for non-residents. Residents of Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Ohio Township. Emsworth, and Kilbuck qualify for resident rates. A $25.00 Caregiver Pass can be added onto a Family Pass.

Note: This information is from 2018. We will update this section when it becomes available. The Avonworth Pool offers private and group swim classes. Water Babies is for children 6 months to 24 months and an adult. Mommy and Me is for children 2 through 48 months and an adult. These classes require an adult to be in the water with the child throughout the lesson. These classes teach water familiarity and safety. They do not teach swim strokes. Each session has five, 30 minute classes. The cost is $50.00 for Passholders and $65.00 for Non-passholders. Bigger kids can take five levels of classes. Level 1 teaches basic water and safety skills. Level 2 teaches the basics of swimming. Level 3 teaches stroke development. Level 4 teaches stroke improvement. Level 5 teaches stroke refinement. Level 6 teaches swimming and skill proficiency. Eight, 30 minute sessions are $60.00 for Passholders and $75.00 for Non-passholders. The Pool also offers private swim lessons. Eight, 30 minute sessions cost $135.00 for Passholders and $150 for Non-passholders. Registration is required.

You have many options for sun protection. This sunscreen contain zinc oxide (the white stuff) in a natural lotion. Zinc Oxide blocks harmful sun rays.

The North Park Pool

North Park has a large pool with numerous FamilyFun activities. Surrounded by the beauty of North Park, this pool has a large 4 foot deep, open swim area, a shallow kiddie area, a waterfall mushroom, a spray park, a spiral slide, dedicated lap lanes, and a new inflatable obstacle course!

The North Park Pool opens on June 1st and closes on September 2nd.

Note: This section is based on information from 2018. We will update this as soon as the information becomes available. The Pool offers American Red Cross Levels 1-5 Learn to Swim classes from July 9 – July 20 and July 23 – August 3. The cost is $30.00 for residents and $38.00 for non-residents. There is a concession area that serves typical fast-food selections. There are changing rooms. The Pool is surrounded by mostly concrete with some grassy areas. There is a Playground nearby. Parking is free. The North Park Pool can get crowded on weekends.

Note: Flotation devices are NOT ALLOWED. This means no life jackets, no floaties, no water wings. (The only exception is special devices for disabled persons.) Food and drinks are not permitted in the pool area. All food and drinks must be consumed in the concession area. Smoking is not allowed except in designated areas. Masks, snorkels, fins, beach balls, and sunglasses are not permitted. Lockers can be rented for $0.25 a day. Rafts can be rented for $5.00 a day for residents and $6.00 a day for non-residents. The North Park Pool is open daily from 1130AM-730PM weather permitting. If the Pool hasn’t opened by 200PM then it will not open that day. The last day for the Pool is September 2nd. There may be reduced hours/availability toward the end of the season.

Resident daily rates are $1.00 for children 0-5, $5.00 for youth and juniors 6-17, $6.00 for adults, and $3.00 for seniors 60+. Non-resident daily rates are $1.00 for children 0-5, $6.00 for youth and juniors 6-17, $8.00 for adults, and $4.00 for seniors 60+.

Pool Passes are available for residents of Allegheny County and Non-Residents. Passes for residents are the Individual Pass (ages 18-59) for $80.00, the Family Pool Pass (2 parents/ 2 children or 1 parent/ 3 children) for $150 with each additional family member $20.00, the Senior Citizen Pool Pass (60+) for $40.00. Passes for non- residents are Individual Pass (ages 18-59) for $100.00, the Family Pool Pass (2 parents/ 2 children or 1 parent/ 3 children) for $188 with each additional family member $25.00, the Senior Citizen Pool Pass (60+) for $50.00. Active Volunteer Firefighters and EMT’s can get in free but they have to fill out a form and apply for their pass.

This sunscreen has 4.5 stars on Amazon. It is a chemical sunscreen – the chemicals interact with the sun’s rays to protect the skin. This sunscreen can be applied to wet skin.

The Cranberry Township Waterpark and Pool

Cranberry Township has a large Waterpark Complex and Pool. There is something for everyone. There is a spray pad for the little set, a pool with a Tipping Bucket and a Waterslide for the bigger kids, and a deep end with a diving board and a Climbing Wall for the older crowd. They also have a sand play area and a sand volleyball court. The Waterpark has changing rooms and a concession stand.

The Pool and Waterpark open on Memorial Day and close on Labor Day.

Flotation devices are not permitted with the exception of US Coast Guard approved life jackets for children under five. An adult must within arm’s reach of all children under 5 and must be with an adult at all times. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18. Proper swim attire is required. Swim diapers are also required for diaper-age children. Everyone must buy a daily pass or have a membership even if they are not swimming. Masks, snorkels, and fins are not permitted. Lunchbox size coolers are permitted but all food must be consumed outside of the Waterpark fenced area. The Spray Pad area is for children under 10 only. Children under 5 must have an adult with them. Children must be 42” tall to use the slide. Goggles, masks, and glasses are not allowed. You must be able to swim safely on your own to use the diving board, climbing wall, and drop slide. No masks, goggles, or glasses are allowed on the diving board, climbing wall, and drop slide. The Waterpark offers swim lessons. They have group swim lessons for Parent and Child, Preschoolers, and levels 1-6 for everyone else. They also offer private lessons for children three and older.Details about swim lessons can be found here:

The Waterpark is open daily from 1130AM to 800PM through September 3rd. They have a Tuesday Night Swim from 900PM – 1100PM and Friday Twilight Swim and Noodle Night from 600PM- 800PM. There is a Lap Swim session mornings from 645AM-845AM through August 4th.

Daily passes for everyone 13+ are $8.00 for residents and $12.00 for non-residents. Children 2-12 pay $7.00 for residents and $10.00 for non-residents. Senior passes for 55+ are $7.00 for residents and $10.00 for non-residents. Children under 2 are free. Twilight rates for entry between 600PM-800PM are $5.00 for residents and $6.00 for non-residents. The Tuesday Night Swim rate is $2.00 for everyone. Lap Swimming is $3.00 for everyone. There are numerous membership packages for residents and non-residents. Member benefits include early entry at 1115AM to the Waterpark, $5.00 Guest passes, free entry to night swims, and discounts on swim lessons and aquatic programs. More and more parents are using sunblocking clothing instead of sunscreen. This swim top comes in boys and girls colors. It holds it color and shape while protecting your children’s skin from sunburn. Sizes range from 3T through kids 11.

The Hampton Community Pool

The Hampton Township Community Pool is a large FamilyFun pool with a zero-entry spray area, a large swimming pool with adult lap lanes, diving boards, two tube slides, and a spiral slide. There is bench seating around the concrete pool deck, shade tents, and a large grassy area for blankets. There is a snack bar and parking and changing rooms.

The Hampton Pool offers swim lessons. They offer classes for infants with their parent and preschool classes for children with no experience. They also have an advanced preschool class for children who have completed the beginner’s classes. There are six levels of classes for those five and up – the Intro to Swim class, the Beginners Skills class, the Basic Stroke Class, the Advance Stroke class, the Stroke Proficiency class, and the Advanced Swimmer class. Spray sunscreen has been banned from the Pool area. Lotion sunscreen is permissible. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Swim diapers must be worn by diaper-age children. They are available for purchase at the admission gate for $1.00 each. Children must be 48” tall to go on the spiral slide. Children must be 42” tall to go on the tube slides. Inflatable toys and flotation devices are not permitted. Proper swim wear must be worn. The Pool is a NO smoking facility. A complete list of rules and regulations can be found here:

The Hampton Pool is open daily from 1200PM – 800PM starting on May 25th with reduced hours May 28 through the 31, June 3-5, and when school goes back into session. The Pool closes on September 3rd. On July 3rd the Pool is open from 1100AM-400PM with free swim from 200PM – 400PM. Pool hours on July 4th are 1200PM-500PM. July 13th from 200PM – 700PM On Saturday July 13th the Pool hosts a Dive-in movie at 900PM. July 20th from 500PM – 800PM is Family Swim & Noodle night.
