Thomas Town is Open at Kennywood!

by Janet Jonus

Ride the Rails with Thomas and his friends at Thomas Town in Kennywood.

Kennywood has officially opened their Thomas Town expansion to the delight of kids of all ages.

Journey with Thomas is closed until further notice. Thomas is in maintenance.

Kennywood Park, Mattel, local dignitaries, and special guests celebrated the opening of Thomas Town at Kennywood Park.

“Thomas is one the most beloved worldwide brands,” Nick Paradise from Kennywood Park said at the Grand Opening. “We are very excited to welcome Thomas and his Friends to Kennywood.”

Julie Freeland from Mattel added, “We believe in the power of play and there is nothing more powerful than experiences families share together.”

Around ten o’clock in the morning, the Acevido Family from New Hampshire, Mattel Thomas Town grand prize winners, cut the ribbon to Thomas Town and the crowds flowed in. Sir Topham Hatt greeted guests. Kids crowded around the four new rides. After a brief wait, Thomas himself chugged into view to the delight of everyone.

The new Thomas Town area is sure to attract Thomas fans from around the world. As the second largest Thomas attraction in North America, Thomas Town is truly special. Even kids who have outgrown Thomas were mesmerized seeing their childhood friends come alive.

Nick Paradise summed up the addition of Thomas Town, “People will come as Thomas fans and leave as Kennywood plans.”

Immerse yourself in the Land of Sodor where Thomas the Tank Engine travels the hallowed tracks of the old Kennywood Railroad while his Friends at Tidmouth Sheds entertain you at their new show, Steel City Adventures.

Thomas Town has four new FamilyFun rides. Cranky’s Drop Tower lifts guests up above Kennywood before bouncing them up and down in a kids version of a classic drop tower ride. Cranky is family ride with a height restriction of 42″. Harold’s Helicopter Tour flies kids on a circular ride up, down, and around in a classic kid’s ride. Kids 36″ tall and under must ride with a Responsible Person over the age of 16, there is no upper height restriction meaning everyone (even parents) can ride but handheld infants (children who cannot walk on their own are handheld infants) cannot ride. Flynn’s Fire Training is another circular ride with an interactive twist. Ride on Flynn and his friends while you aim at targets to “put out” fires in the central building. Kids 36″ and under must ride with a Responsible Person, there is no upper height limit, and handheld infants cannot ride. Diesel Drivers lets the Sodor Diesels get in on the action. This oval track ride is a classic kids train ride that takes riders along the Diesel Tracks of Sodor. Kids under 36″ must ride with a Responsible Person, there is no upper height limit, and handheld infants are not allowed.

Of course the ultimate highlight, and sure to have a long line, is the opportunity to Journey with Thomas himself! The former Kennywood Railroad is home to Thomas! Ride on Thomas along the Kennywood Railroad tracks and immerse yourself in a new Thomas and Friends story.
