FamilyFunEats: Spiced Applesauce

Fresh applesauce is surprisingly easy to make and tastes so much better than bottled sauce. Kids can cut the apples slices into chunks with a butter Knife. The FamilyFunKids learned to cut food by practicing on mushrooms and apple chunks when they were still in preschool … and they are excellent cooks now.

  1. 6 large apples, peeled and diced
  2. 1 cup water
  3. 1/2 cup sugar
  4. 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  5. 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  6. 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  7. 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  8. 1/4 teaspoon salt
  9. 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  10. 1/2 cup sugar
Fun Things to Do with Kids
  1. Place all ingredients in a heavy saucepan, stir.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until mixture boils.
  3. Lower heat to low, cover and cook for 15-20 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Using a potato masher, mash the mixture into applesauce.
  6. Taste and add sugar as needed.

Store in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed container.

To make plain applesauce, use six apples, 1 tablespoon lemon, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Prepare the same as above.
